Our Projects: Building a Safer, Stronger Kays

The heart of Kays Community NPO is progress.  After surviving three fires and four floods in just two and a half years, we aren’t just rebuilding—we are reinventing.

Our projects are designed to move our residents from crisis to consistency.  Here is how we are transforming the park and how you can play a part.

The “Fire & Flood” Resilience Initiative

The Goal:  To re-engineer our infrastructure so that no family ever loses their home to the elements again.

  • Fire Prevention:  Installing high-capacity fire extinguishers, creating clear fire breaks, and upgrading electrical systems to prevent possible short circuits.
  • Flood Mitigation:  Implementing professional drainage systems and raising ground levels in high-risk zones.
  • Emergency Fund:  Maintaining a “Rapid Response” resource to provide immediate shelter and food if disaster strikes.

How to Help: We need civil engineers, drainage experts, and funding for heavy-duty materials.

The Housing Project

The Goal:  To assist residents whose homes were destroyed in replacing temporary structures with fire-resistant, weather-proof housing.

  • Since 1983, our residents have built their own homes. We are now providing the technical guidance and better materials to ensure those homes are safe and permanent.
  • Focusing on sustainable, low-cost building techniques that suit the Western Cape climate.
  • How to help:  Donate building materials, provide professional labour, or donate towards the cause.

Training and Skills Development

The Goal:  To break the cycle of poverty by turning the park into a center for learning and employment.

  • The Workshop:  A shared space for residents to learn carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work – skills that can be used to maintain the park and find work in the greater Helderberg area.
  • Micro-Enterprise Support:  Helping residents start small businesses (like communal gardens or repair shops) within the community.
  • How to help:  Partner with us as a training provider or donate tools.

Infrastructure & “The Green Line”

The Goal:  Modernizing the essential services that keep a community running.

  • Solar Street Lighting:  Ensuring safety at night without increasing municipal electricity costs.
  • Waste Management:  Implementing a community-led recycling and refuse program to keep our environment clean and healthy.
  • Road Maintenance:  Repairing the internal roads damaged by heavy rains to ensure reliable emergency vehicle access.
  • Garden Project:  We are creating functional vegetable gardens to improve food security and community aesthetics.
